Cicadas Set to Emerge in 2024

Brood I, Brood II and Brood XXIII to Make Spectacular Appearance

Prepare for an extraordinary entomological spectacle this spring as two broods of cicadas, known as Brood I and Brood II, emerge from the soil after spending years underground. These periodical cicadas have a unique life cycle, with Brood I emerging every 13 years and Brood II every 17 years.

2024 Cicada Emergence: A Geographic Journey

In 2024, Brood I cicadas will emerge in parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois. This will be the first appearance of Brood I since 2011. Brood II, which last emerged in 2007, is expected to grace the eastern United States, including parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Historical Perspective: Roman Numerals and the Brood System

The naming of cicada broods using Roman numerals dates back to 1893, when entomologist C.L. Marlatt proposed this system to identify the different regional groups of periodical cicadas. Brood I was designated as the starting point, and subsequent broods were assigned sequential Roman numerals.
