Campbell Brings Experienced Linebacker To Cyclones

With the 2022 football season quickly approaching, Iowa State Cyclones football began fall camp with several roster changes. Head coach Matt Campbell brought in an experienced linebacker to add depth to the defense: Jake Hummel. Hummel played college football at the University of Northern Iowa from 2018 to 2021 and was a key player on the team's defense the past two seasons.

Hummel's Strong Leadership

During his time at UNI, Hummel played in 44 games and had 227 Total Tackles (TT), 18.0 Tackles for Loss (TFL), 5.5 Sacks, three interceptions, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries.
The 6'1", 238-pound linebacker was named All-Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) honorable mention in 2020 and first team All-MVFC in 2021. He also earned team captain honors this past season.

Background Of Matt Campbell

Matt Campbell, born in 1979 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is currently the head coach at Iowa State. Prior to being head coach at Iowa State, Campbell held the head coaching position for the University of Toledo from 2011 to 2014. As head coach, he lead the University of Toledo to three consecutive bowl games and had 35 wins over four seasons.
Before becoming head coach, Campbell spent three years on the coaching staff at the University of Iowa from 2008 to 2010. In 2008, he worked as a graduate assistant, In 2009 as a tight ends coach, and in 2010 as an assistant offensive line coach.

Assistant Coaches Joining Campbell

Campbell has been able to build a strong assistant coaching staff around him during his time at Iowa State. This past off-season, Campbell hired several new assistant coaches, including Nate Scheelhaase as wide receivers coach and Taylor Stubblefield as cornerbacks coach.
As an assistant coach between 2009 and 2021, Scheelhaase started his career as a graduate assistant at Illinois State University. From there, he went on to the the University of Kansas in 2010 as a graduate assistant, in 2011 as a quaterbacks coach, and from 2012 to 2018 as an offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. Then, from 2019 to 2021, he was the wide receivers coach at the University of Illinois.

Stubblefield has also been an assistant coach since 2009 when he began his career as a defensive assistant at the University of Toledo. He stayed there until 2014 when he took a position as a graduate assistant at the University of Oregon. From 2015 to 2017, he was a defensive assistant at the University of Colorado. Then from 2018 to 2021, he held the position of cornerbacks coach at Purdue University.

With the addition of experienced players like Hummel and assistant coaches like Scheelhaase and Stubblefield, the Iowa State Cyclones football team will look to compete for a Big 12 championship in 2022.
